Chana Dal Phara in Masala Gravy- Chana Dal Ke Masale Wale Phare



Ingredients (for 3-4 servings)

  • 1 cup chana dal (soaked for 3-4hrs)

  • ½ cup urad dal (soaked for 3-4hrs)

  • 1 ½ cup whole wheat flour

  • 2 large onion

  • 10-12 garlic cloves

  • 2 inch ginger piece

  • 3-4 green chillies

  • ½ cup coriander leaves (chopped)

  • 2 tsp coriander powder

  • 1  tsp garam masala

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 3-4 tbsp mustard oil

  • ½ tsp cumin seeds

  • 1/8 tsp asafoetida

Method (How to make masala phara)

  • Soak chana dal and urad dal for 4-5 hrs. Drain the water from the chana dal and urad dal and make coarse paste with ½ of the ginger, garlic  and 2 green chillies.

  • Add 1 tsp coriander powder, ½ or the chopped coriander leaves, ½ tsp garam masala, salt and mix well.

  • Add ½ tsp salt into the flour and knead soft dough, allow to rest for 10-15 minutes.

  • Make paste of ginger, garlic, and onion.

  • Heat and deep and big wok add mustard oil.

  • Add asafoetida, and cumin sauté for few seconds.

  • Add onion and ginger garlic paste and sauté till oil separate.

  • Add coriander powder, garam masala, turmeric, and red chilli powder add 1 tbsp water and sauté continuously  till oil separate. Add 3 cup water and cook till start boiling.

  • Make small lemon size balls with the kneaded flour and dip in the dry flour and roll into small puri.

  • Put 1 spoon dal paste and fold to make half circle.

  • Put into the boiling gravy.

  • Make all phare with the same manner and put into the gravy. If you feel water is less add more water and cook on the medium flame for 18-20 minutes.

  • Switch off the flame add chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
